So I was looking back over New Zealand (NZ) and there was so much going on over the last 5 weeks I was trying to figure out how to cover the entire thing. So this is going to be a two post post if you will. This post will refer to the North Island. So we started out in Auckland please see the post below for information on that.

So we were starting on the Kiwi Experience for the first time, so up we got at the ungodly hour of 7 and went outside Base in Auckland waiting for the bus. We got on with our lovely driver for the next week or so Spud. So off we went to our first stop which was on a nice viewpoint of the city.

So then on we went for a while looking at the lovely NZ country side seeing everything there was to see on our way to Mercury Bay. We stopped at Catheral Cove, the hot pools (which is a very funny place) and rested our heads for the night in a place called Turtle Cove, where we bonded with some of the guys over the great game of pool and the beloved variation killer pool (mam its not as bad as it sounds, it just means its a knockout competition).

So next day we set off again and this was the day of activities, we went off and did a bit of walk through some caves, OHS is not that big in NZ I learned that day. Some sections of the caves were pitch dark and no warning at the start that a torch might be a good idea. So anyway off we went across some wire bridges which were endless sources of entertainment especially once we found the sign saying max 10 people. Next it was time for something a bit more enjoyable. ZORB, I do realise that the name is not very discriptive but what it is you are strapped into a big plastic ball and shoved down a hill. A lot of fun but not really worth the money that its costs (Travel Tip 1). After we regained some balance off we went on the bus again up a mountain and did some luging. Now this is fun, imagine a small piece of plastic and flying down a hill while sitting ontop of it, worst part being the illusion that you have some control over your craft but sadly you don’t if your over 6ft tall as then the brakes don’t work. After 5 near death experience in 1 hour we went and got a good Kodac moment (Please see below).

Next day we headed onto Rotorua for a bit of culture. This was an evening where we would see a Mauri village and be shown how the Mauri people traditionally greeted people, what was the food they ate and also how it was prepared. Now all of the group were picked up from the hostel and were brought to the village by a driver named “Nuttar”, his name was very descriptive of his personality. One big part of the Mauri Culture is for each group to have a chief. Low and behold guess who was made chief, yes you guessed it folks, me. Now some people might think that this is a privilage but sadly its not as you have to lead the group, you have to represent your group in front of Mauri Warriors (who take this stuff very seriously). So we had a lovely evening, food, talking, learning what more could some one want.

We went to a place called Waitomo to do some blackwater cave tubing, pretty much what it means is that you are going through caves in the pitch dark floating on a inner tube of a tire. Good fun but the water is around 8 degs and that is cold.

So whats next on the trip, Taupo! This is where I did the trip away from home right of passage, the Sky Dive. It was one of the most terrifing, trilling, tantalising experiences I have ever done (did you like the little bit of illeration). The the whole thing only took 30 minutes which was good because I didn’t have to thing about getting thrown out of a plane at 15,000ft. I did it with Jonny and a few others from the bus.

SkyDive link 1

SkyDive link 2

SkyDive link 3

So next it was down to River Valley to do some rafting but there was a little problem, the river was 6ft higher that it should be and we couldn’t go out. So we had nothing better to do that hang around the lodge in a 30 man room and relax. It was a fun night of devilment, well what do you expect when you put 50 backpackers in a single place with access to booze. So after that fun evening it was down to Wellington for a few nights. This was where everyone broke up, some people were only doing the north Island, Some were doing further trips inlands but the majority of us were doing the south Island going on, so after catching up on some sleep we went off on the ferry onto the south Island for more fun. Please see more in the next post.

Hey all,

Yes its true I have finally left Sydney, the savage house in Ashfield and the nice job in Vodafone. So its back on the road again first stop was Brisbane to meet Bev, a friend I met in India, strangely also met up with Dara and Dippy. So that was a nice couple of days, nothing major to report except for the morning of the flight. So the flight was at 10:30pm and I woke up in the morning around 8, slowly getting a shower, had a cup of coffee and no dramas just fluttered about. Got the bags put in storage all that type of stuff. Ok time to check the email, better have a quick look at the flight this is were all the problems started. The flight was at 10:30am. I looked at the clock, it was 8:45am. Right so I got my arse down to reception found out what was the fastest way to the airport. She said the train. So I ran pretty much the whole way to the train station ( with a 20kg back on my back and a 7kg bag on my front). Jumped on the train and now it was 50 mins before the flight. The train was supposed to take 20 mins so I would arrive in the airport 30 mins before the flight. Perfect timing I was thinking to myself. The operative word is that the train was supposed to take 20 mins, it ended up taking around 30 with me having mini heart attacks every 2 minutes or so. Get into the airport racing over the skywalk with the speed of Linford Christy and the grace of a hippo. get to the departures and ask the lovely lady “Are you still checking in for the Cairns flight”. She looked at the clock, looked at me, I mustered up every bit of a charming smile even though I was hung over and completely out of breath, with a sigh she said ok, I thanked her perfously, through her every document I had, and got checked in.

So after all the joy with the flight arrived in Cairns, spent a nice week not doing a whole lot just lazin about the hostel. And now I am in Auckland, new country, new people, new money, new weather (my god its cold). Have a look at the picks and sorry it took so long to get a post up again.

Hi All,

Yes it has been a while. So what have I been doing with my time, well mostly trying to settle into Australia and figure out this way of life. So I have been busy, trying to figure out the drinking culture and how to get the most cheap pints and the like.

You are also wondering what is the comic stip! Well we have decided to put together a comic called the little leprechauns. We all designed our own charcter under the great tutilage of Jonny Keane. I still have to finish mine and figure how to put a beard on a comic character but its fun to learn. This will be a updated hopefully once a week with the interestings stories of little jonny, little brian, little ian and little joe. I hope you like it and please give us lots of feed back.

So I have been a few places lately, I stared in Melbourne and we got started there and landed ourselves an apartement with Norman, our long haired landlord. It was an interesting place and remided me a lot of my fantastic apartement on Adelaide Rd. So we all setteled in and got to the serious work of discovering the night life of melboure and I cooked again which was nice.

I got talking to Suzie and Erica and they were off in the lovely Perth and I decided on a whim to go across with Brian. So we flew across. Now the thing with Virgin Blue airline is that they are lovely and cheap but the flights are nearly always at terrible hours, for example this flight was at 6:00am. Had a great few days in Perth with a few funny moments as well.

Me and Erica being very Civilized

Brian, Ciara, Sarah and Me

Me and Sarah showing them how its done

So off we after myself and Brian came back from Perth plans changed and we were off to Sydney. There was much discussion over the mode of transport to be taken and it was finally decided that hiring a car would be the best option. So off we went to the people in EuroCar and got ourselfs a beaut of a car the Subaru Outback. It was was a easy trip 1000km in two days with Brian, Ian and Jonny driving. Without a drivers licence I could not drive but it was a blessing sitting in the back watching DVDs on laptops and catching up on my sleep.

After only one week myself and Jonny were back to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup. This is a huge event with the main day of the Cup hosting 120,000 people. It was a brilliant day and I got to meet up with my sister Anne. Jonny and I were staying with Frankie and Yolinda. So off we went to the cup.

There are many things that interest you when your dressed up this well

Just looking good

Having a drink or two

When in Rome

Taking a breather

Anne and Me looking well

Myself and Jonny with the Ladies

Big smile now

Another night out

Jetsetting again back up to Sydney. We went looking gun hoe for apartement and job and after 3 short weeks of looking hard and the odd bit of divilment here and there we finally found work and a house. We are living in a beautiful place with wooden floors and oh yea a room to myself ( first time in 7 months). Myself, Ian and Brian are working for the lovely people at Ericcson ( I should really make sure how to spell the name of the company) and Jonny is working for Commonwealth Bank. All doing well.

Talk to you soon Joe

So we in Oz now, but nobody says g’day mate, it rained there last week, and I got bit by something that didnt kill me… Then again we’ve seen neighbours, drank a slab of stubbies or two, and we live down the road from a pricilla-style drag show.. Melbournes nice, full of skyscrapers, efficient public transport and strange accents. The fringe and loads of other festivals are on, start of summer here, so theres plenty to do for the employment-challenged during the sunny weekdays :)

My dvds seem to be covered in masala chai and other random gunk, will put up some pics of indonesia and kuala-lumpar when the laptop arrives and I get a wire brush to em maybe…

Quiet Jakarta

Anyway, after thailand we we headed to malaysia to find the twin towers (the other ones), but they switch the lights off ater 1 so we lost em again…

Busy Jakarta

After being accosted by a bunch of transvestites and being charged 6euro for a beer we made a speedy getaway to jakarta, in java, indonesia (nerdy jokes galore)… A few days there and some advice from some random german people we headed to sumatra to find and climb a volcano called mt. sabayak. Brian got sick halfway up, but I decided to wander, after a few circles managed to get to the top and eggie smelling crater..

Berastagi, Sumatra

Decided then to find a deserted island and get a tent, problems encountered included the fact that we were in the midlands, and had no tent.. Eventually after a flight and boat we arrived on an island called bintan, still indonesia but close to singapore.

Found a quiet beach and lived in a hut on stilts over the water playing 25 and chess for a week or so.. Well, we seen some floating houses, went snorckling and brused up on our bahasa indonesia..

The gentlemans hut on bintan

Singapore on the way in (Counted 40-something boats bigger than o’connell st)

From there to singapore (the most paranoid city on earth), met back up with the lads, before flying south to here

Hey All,

This is going to be a short post in 30 minutes I am heading out to start my night dive. So yea ye all know I was going to do my Open Water Padi Course but this is the thing I really like it so now tonight I am going to be completing my Advanced open water course. This means I have done 9 dives in the last 5 days. I am certified to go down to 30m. I am able to dive at night. I have done a course on navigation so I can navigate a new dive site from a map. I now have decent control of myself underwater and its the best craic ever. I did it with a place called Seashell Diving. They are a little more expensive than some others but small groups so if anyone is thinking of doing a dive course on Ko Tho I would recommend these guys. Oh yea I swam with sharks the other day, around 25 grey reef sharks. Now this might sound scary but it was one of the best experiances of my life. I have not seen a lot of strange things, but I have experianced them, learning what stomach and intestine equalisation really means. There is a lot of cool things and I think I have found a pastime that could be the one for me. Jonny has been going strong on the diving from as well and is doing the night dive with me tonight.

the Dive Group, (Zoe (instructor), Jonny, Ryan, Tim and Me)

Doing what is called the James Bond Roll entry.

Me and Jonny relaxing inbetween dives

Andres, Zoe, Jonny and Me. (This was the last day of advanced Dives)

Its not all fun and games some study has to be done as well

After all that hard diving you need a drink (Tim, Me, Jonny, Ryan)
I have had some close calls like running very low on air but with the training you are so relaxed and everything is drilled into and you always have backups. Its really good and I’m rambling as I don’t have a lot of time but its great fun, and its party night tonight because I don’t have to get up at 6 tomorrow morning, most dive morning are very early so I am looking forward to the sleep in.

Talk to you soon

Have not made a post in a while, me and the internet have not been getting on. Left Bangkok and went to Koh Pha-Ngan for the full moon party. We arrived 5 days early because all the accomidation fills up in preperation for the full moon. Stayed in the Sea Side Resort on Sunset Beach. It was a great place, a relaxed bar/resturaunt (Ask for Yao), spending all the days playing pool while nursing our hangovers and getting ready for the following night, it was pretty much 5 days of partying. So we met loads of people, English, American, Dutch, German, Icelandic and loads of Irish. We really have just infested the Island. All they guys working in the places have british accents and its very funny when a Thai guy turns around to you and goes “Alright Mate”. The phrases developed for the trip were legendary, like beer o’clock, bucket o’clock, let it rain. (times of the different happy hours). It was a great night for the actual full moon and did a lot of dancing, got destroyed by body paint by an artisticly challenged Bangor Girl(as you can see above).

Starting the Scuba diving tomorrow and should be good fun, got a nice bungalow and the resturant beside us is showing Hot Fuzz later tonight so looking forward, going to be staying away from the beer for a little while. After that we pretty much have a week to get down to Singapore so will decide what to do then. Hopefully back to a bit of proper travelling.

Talk to you soon

Stayed a few days, took a walk around, more big temples, and got cought in a huge thunderstorm..

The best place ive ever seen to buy stuff though, I know work for AP as a photojournalist and can drive an artic lorry Also good if your into ping-pong.

Everybody wears these yellow t-shirts in support of the king in Bkok (Betya theyre free), the day we arrived there was a huge protest against him. He’s plastered himself up on every billboard and public building, surreal for a city that looks so much like a eurporean one.

From there we headed further south, took the boat from some city (Cant remember the name), and headed to Ko Phanang.. Full moon party place, looks surreal at night, thousands of people partying on the beach..

(The view from my hammock, pretty much the only photo ive taken since the boat on the way here)

Decided on a whim last night to skip the full moon though, so myself and brian will head to indonesia (thanks pad) for a week or two before oz.. Parties are great here, but think ill be a fully fledged alchoholic if I stay. The aim is to climb the active volcano near jakarta Anyway, would reccomend these isalnds for a piss-up holiday, maybe a sample of the full moon, but not much else besides.. Everythings expensive, too crowded, and the premiership blasts out of every bar at night.. Each to his own though! Had a great laugh with the lads, and some extremelly strange nights out, and will miss the pool.. Heres a few pics anyways from the last while, havent managed to take very many in thailand, and a memory card failed too.. Some are in black and white because im messing with my new camera still..

(Main train station in Bangkok)

more temples (in fairness, these ones were pretty cool, even if I didnt pay the entrance fee and go inside)

(sleeping dogs - like wellies and bikes)

(Boat on the river)

I can finally grow a unique beard now

So, have an overnight boat+bus to kuala-lumpur, and after a day there we fly to jakarta in java.. (nerdy jokes galore). Hopefully alot more pics once we get off the beaten trail and sober again

So leaving the subcontinent, no more masala dosai or idly, roti or sambar dal, dont know about cows on the streets but definatly no fancy sari’s, cricket matches, bison or chai stalls… In the airport now, it costs $1 for 15mins, hopefully not a sign of things to come… Left Arugam bay by shared taxibus yesterday, 15 hours later arrived near colombo.. Got to hold a turtle on the way tho..

Anyway meeting the lads on tuesday, very strange, joe reckons we’re institutionalized Looking forward to bkok, but a busy few days nonetheless.. After this I dont know, islands, full moons, scuba and a long trip down south…

Overall sri lanka is like galway, good craic/ nightlife/ landscapes /people are friendly but a little cracked (in a good way), you can surf nearby and the music is cool.. the weathers a bit better tho. Then India is like a group of leprechauns and pixies, 60s hippies, shane mcgowan, gerry ryans head on a stick and the entire population of lietrim, under the influence of a multitude of psychedelic drugs, all partying on top of croke patrick in a hurricane (in a good way too, and with plenty of milk tea)..

Anyway have a flight now, air lanka, you get your own tv and it cost less than a tv liscence at home

Updated: In bangkok, jaysus its different than expected.. Definatly no cows on the road… But they did have cameras on the outside of the plane and you could watch them on your little tv…

(Kandy)

This place is a strange one allright.. Started in colombo, to be honest didnt really like it, parts like dublin or any other big (read rich) european cities and then out of town shanty towns and stuff as usuall… I think the thing that attracts you to indian cities maybe is that this sort of segregation isnt usually that apparent (or even there at all) in some… If theres a four seasons or a taj, ther’l still be someone takin a dump against the wall… Anyway, the place looks like the north during the troubles, checkpoints everywhere, pill-boxes etc. Funny thing is, even the army “stop” signs at the checkpoints have advertisements, like ”stop now - army” on one side and “bold - for the whitest whites” on the other.. Unfortunatly and obviously takin pics is out of the question pretty much anywhere youd want to in colombo..

(Temple half way up adams peak)

We rambled on to kandy, really nice hill-town in south-central sri lanka.. Buddhas tooth lives there apparently, but its covered in rock so I guess you have to take the monks word for it. Either way the whole beating drums and chanting is fairly good anyway, they sure know how to rock a mass..

(buddhas on the hill - Kandy)

Seen some nice dancing and fire walking too. Plenty of people there, a bit too much, so we saw the sites by tuc-tuc over a day or two, pretended to be gem dealers to exchange indian currency (your not mean to bring it out of the country), and wandered around tea-plantations, the national parks, and an elephant orphanage…

(Botanical Gardens)

Got lots of pics of elephants but to be honest was like shooting fish in a barrell, the whole lot of them chained up most of the time and about 200 tourists around em…

Everyone we met said dont go east or north, so we decided to go east (well away from the really dodgy parts) for a bit of peace and quiet, ended up in arugam bay, a surfers paradise wrecked first by the tsunami and now by government checkpoints looking for tigers in the neighbouring “strict” national park..

Took us 4 days to get there instead of one, in the mean time we climbed sri lanks 3rd highest mountain, adams peak to the temple at the top for dawn. We left 2.30 at night, figuring that since theres steps all the way up (and we stayed on a mountain before dont-ya-know) that it would be a stroll in the park… Unfortunatly 4,800 steps later in freezing wind and rain we arrived with dead legs and buns of steel, nearly killed us until we met some pilgrims who had come the long way (23km instead of 8km) through leech territory…

(It was feckin freezin and you cant wear shoes

The view is meant to be the most stunning in the country at dawn, but the clouds and rain meant be couldnt see more than 5foot ahead of us. Was well worth it though, learned all about the shrine and buddhism, and even got a sneak peak at the closed shrine in the temple.. The sun came out for about 20secs after:

(Dawn)

Anyway arugam is a decent place, laid back beach life as usuall, even managed to nearly stand up on the surfboard (in fairness the teacher is an international surfer). A late night and too much of the local coconut distilled spirit arrick after, coupled with dawn wakeboarding (which I can do) in huge waves and some hidden rocks has put me out of action for the next few days, but on the bright side the scars look pretty damn cool live and learn…

(Overexposed tea-plantation - part of a HDR)

By far the redeeming experiences of sri lanka in my eyes anyway was the hill country area (we toured it over 3 days by tuc tuc), prob the most stunning place you could imagine.. People brilliant, even heard a “namaste”… Learned alot from talking to NGO people here, about the conflict and piolitiacl situation.. Still dont have a clue though… Seems to be a common thread, both very complicated to solve, and incredibly stupid to continue at the same time for both sides… even if the majority of people want it stopped. Its hard not to notice the differnce in employment of the tamil and sinhilese population here anyway, have seen plenty of racism, and the tea plantation workers (allthough I dont think strongly tied with the LTTE) seem to mostly be tamil. (As usuall the owners are mostly western, according to people we talked to). Since the war strated again this place is getting worse, tourism has taken a dive, petrol prices are up and inflation is up too, not the best situation. Interesting though, have talked to a lot of people here in the last week or two, and not one really thought the war was a neccesity for either side. Mind you we obviously cant travel at the moment to LTTE territory or jaffna in the north, so not exactly a thurough survey!

The army checkpoints we went through were no bother until getting here, one guy took a power trip at my expense on the way then, (think he was compensating for something with his M15), but anyway rings home how bad it must be for locals, especially tamils travelling in the south, considering harassing tourists is extremelly rare, and that wasnt much anyway..

As usuall throughout the trip, the people we meet every day are class, and its fairly damn amazing their attitude considering the things that have happened in the last few years… Country is stunning, wildlife is cool, seen giant bats, wild elephants, lizards, millions of strange birds, mad lookin insects, and the dogs arnt half as evil as the andaman ones.. Will stick here for the next few days and maybe stay a day or two in colombo before leaving..

So here’s the thing myself and Ian were arriving back into Chennai(Madras) from Port Blair a bit under the influence from the night before and without a lot of sleep. We came up with the idea to ask all the Airlines whats their cheapest flight in the next two days. We were thinking that we would get a cheap flight to Delhi or Calcutta. We even had the dreams of getting up to Manali. But the main thing was that we thought we would be staying in India. Well as I am writing this I am no longer in India. We are pretty close but far enough away. So guess what were in Sri Lanka. So I know what your thinking how in hell can you go from having a trip in India to just darting off to Sri Lanka well the opportunity presented itself and we took it. I must say one of the biggest factors was that were able to get the flight to Sri Lanka and then a flight to Bangkok for the same price as what we were going to have to pay just flying to Bangkok from India.

So it means that we are going to miss a few things in India and thats India finished which I don’t think has sunk in yet. If that means I will never get good iddly again there will be war. I will have to come up with a highlights list of the India Trip but I will leave that to a drunken night. The great thing is the excitment is growing again in the travelling. The not really understanding how much things are. What way to deal with people. What are the correct protocols involved. For example we had some lunch for a very good price and everyone was using a knife and fork. My God it just takes all the fun out of eating. If you don’t belive me try making yourself a curry and rice and eat it with your hands, makes the whole experiance better. The only rule is never use your left hand for anything, the left hand is reserved for a far dirtier job.

So first impressions of Sri Lanka are really strange the place is in some ways a lot more developed than India and a lot cleaner but I am not getting the same vibe. In India there is a community feel even in the cities, you know everyone know each other but it more than likely will just take a couple of days to get used to the people. Its a lot more westernised than India and you see a lot of people in jeans and stuff like that but it has benifits we might sample the night life tonight and see if we can have a bit of craic. Oh yea and every third person is either working for the police and the army. Its a bit crazy that way I have never seen so many machine guns in my life. Coming into the city there are loads of check points where cars are searched and bunkers there with army people in them just incase there is a suprise attack. But the lads seem nice and smiley so it will probably be shanti.

Anyway off now and see what sort of mischeive I can get myself into for the night.

Talk to you soon
